We fast so we can feast in freedom.
There is a great difference between: ‘I can’t help but eat or drink that’ and ‘I have the discipline to say no and when I choose to feast I will say yes.’
One person is a slave to their impulses. The other is his own master and has freedom to feast when he chooses. But we must fast to gain mastery over our impulses. Instead of them whipping us like slaves every day, we can turn the table and become their Tyrant.
St. Paul wrote: “But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection (1 Cor. 9:27).”
Fasting brings true freedom..
